Mountains and Alms
The Hochkönig in summer is a paradise for hiking, biking and climbing. There are hundreds of kilometres of trails around the village of Dienten that give you access to some beautiful mountain environments.
Every day throughout July and August, a different mountain lift is in operation in the area. This is especially handy for those with kids and gives you a great chance to get up into the alpine and soak in the views.
Many working Alms are open during the summer. These traditional farm buildings on the mountain side offer a welcome break from your day’s activities and provide excellent local food and drink. Pichl-Alm is approximately 1 hour’s hike from Dienten Cabin and is especially nice for enjoying the sun set glow on the steep face of the Hochkönig.
Mountain bikers will discover a variety of single track and fire roads to enjoy straight from the chalet. The area is superbly undeveloped, so you can experience the environment in all its raw beauty. Those wanting some lift assistance can head over to Leogang bike park (approx. 30 minutes) where there are world class freeride and downhill trails in abundance. The roads around Dienten also provide fantastic terrain for those with skinny tires. The chalet provides a great base to tackle some challenging climbs and descents during your stay.
If you just can’t wait until next winter, the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier is approx. 40 minutes away and offers skiing from September until late spring. The Dachstein Glacier is about an hour away and is open all summer with skiing, cross country and a super park.
A variety of summer cultural and music festivals take place throughout the region. Of particular note are the Saalfelden Jazz Festival and the Harvest Festival. Many traditional events happen in the villages of the area, even including the ‘Dumpling Festival’ in Maria Alm!
